Scams? What is it

Here's a question I have... Earlier today I read a post on one of my favorite forums that to me implied that Herbalife is a scam. I've never been associated with them. I know they happen to have some new products out that are pretty good. Would I join? If anything, I'd join to get something at a discount if it were truly good. But I have an acquaintance who made $5,000 per month from the statement... "Lose 15 pounds in 30 days! Ask me how!" When bad press hit the company, he lost that income. But it did work for him. But I keep reading posts that imply the company itself is a scam... Sure, I assume there are bad apple distributors there like everywhere else on earth. I'm talking about the company and the concept. To my knowledge they recently launched a product designed to enhance the body's Nitric Oxide production. It's based on solid research. It's "for real". So is the WHOLE THING a scam? I don't think so for one. Now Herbalife is just an example. Lots of people call lots of things "scams". Any one who tells you you can get in an MLM (or any business) and make money without constant, daily effort is not telling you the facts. But calling something a scam because people who believed in pipe dreams lost money through their own greed would be like calling McDonald's a scam if a franchisee decided they should be entitled to make money without flippng burgers. You may just need something besides a pre-packaged opportunity. If so, here are my top picks for "do it yourself opportunities"...
